MATTHEW HAANAPPEL WINS STATE AWARD
Matthew Haanappel, 18 of Croydon Hillshas won the inaugural Rent the Roo Sports Award in the 2013 Victorian Young Achiever Awards. Matthew won the Award from a strong field of nominees and was one of six category winners announced on Friday 12thApril 2013 at Etihad Stadium. 330 guests attended the Gala event.
Matthew was presented with his Award byMark McAllion, Chief Executive Officer, VicSport on behalf of Rent the Roo.
The Hon Ryan Smith MP, in his capacity as Minister for Youth Affairs and Patron of the Awards later announced Daniel Flynn, 24 of Blackburnas the 2013 Victorian Young Achiever of the Year.
The six category winners were:
Matthew Haanappel, 18 of Croydon Hills – Rent the Roo Sports Award
Simon Schulz, 28 of Timboon – Victorian Government’s Small Business Achievement Award
Harry Coffey, 17 of Swan Hill – Academy Graphics Regional Achiever Award
Dr Elizabeth Verghese, 28 of Eltham – BASF Science and Technology Award
Daniel Flynn, 24 of Blackburn – Harcourts Leadership and Innovation Award
Josephine Hunter, 27 of Alexandra – Saward Dawson Community Service and Volunteering Award
The six winners each received $2,000 and a trophy. Daniel won an additional $2,000 and the state award trophy.
Matthew Haanappel, 18 of CROYDON HILLS has Cerebral Palsy. At 14 he broke his first Aged National Record. Over the past four years Matthew has broken a total of 31 Aged National Records and four Open Records. Matthew first represented Australia at the 2010 German Swimming Championships, returning in 2011 with the Australian Team. Matthew also represented Australia at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London winning a Gold and Bronze medal. In 2012 he became the first male disability student to be elected Victorian Male Captain for the 2012 School Sport Australia Swimming Championships.
